Lifestyle Matters does not seek to establish a culture of dependency. It aims to help people to rediscover their independence by becoming creative problem solvers and to make informed choices about the issues that will affect their health. In order to avoid a culture of dependency, the programme has been devised so that intervention by facilitators is limited to a definite timescale after which they withdraw from the group.
The final session described here provides participants with the opportunity to review what has been learnt and to reflect on how it was achieved. The group should then be encouraged to recognise and celebrate their achievements, consider the relationships that have been formed and to begin to envisage a future without the group. This time is key to the process of transformation, which is at the heart of the programme.
